Stevens on Death Penalty

Justice John Paul Stevens, who recently retired from the United States Supreme Court, has written a review of David Garland’s book, Peculiar Institution: America’s Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition, in the current issue of the New York Review of Books. The review has attracted media comment in the New York Times. The year he joined the Court, in 1996, Stevens voted to reinstate the death penalty after it had been suspended in Furman v. Georgia. As he prepared to leave the Court, he announced that he had become an abolitionist.
